In late June 2009, Councillors approved funding for the Mansfield Skate Plaza and accepted £50,000 from the Big Lottery Fund.
Further funding was also been obtained from, Nottinghamshire County Council, Mansfield District Council, Waste Recycling Environment Ltd (WREN) and Veolia to finance the project.
The plans for the Skate Plaza were driven by a group of local young people, who have held regular meetings with the District Council and consulted with more than 100 other young people about how the Skate Plaza could look.
They made funding applications, undertook local consultations, visited similar projects all over England and selected the specialist builder – Maverick Industries.
Local skateboarder Tim Smith, who chaired the project group commented: “The Skate Plaza project has been driven by local young people, who have put in a lot of work over the last two-and-a-half years to see the project come to fruition.”
“This is a great opportunity for them to showcase their work and I would encourage all local residents and young people to come along to the event, to get a better understanding of the project and see what is happening for themselves.”
Councillor Eddie Smith, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council, added: “I’m delighted to see that the new Skate Plaza at Fisher Lane Park is the first of its kind in the area and will provide new recreation opportunities for young people.”
“I’m also delighted with the involvement of these youngsters and their enthusiasm for the project.”
